Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. As an only girl Scott was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she entered Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school while also working at two job. She hoped to be an English teacher at high school. The dream of becoming an English teacher in high school ended when she dropped out of high school. Her career began by performing live poems and her own work. In the end, she teamed up together with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. After that, she got collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was also able to learn about the performing arts during the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was contracted by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
